February 4, 1932: "The projected new forest fire watch tower will be erected at the summit of Cajon pass west of the National Old Trails highway, it was announced yesterday by J.A. Graves, district fire chief for the California division of forestry.
Recent surveys were made of the best observation points for discerning forest fires by Graves and W.H. Coupe, state warden stationed in Pasadena. The figures were checked in the local office with the summit site winning over several other possible locations.
Plans are under way to speed work on the tower which will be constructed at a cost of approximately $1,200.
The tower will protect valuable timber and water sheds on the north side of the mountains and also in the pass itself, it was stated. Heretofore, forest fires have been reported in this section by motorists and ranchers." (The San Bernardino County Sun)

August 30, 1939: "Nick LaPorta and Jack Van Luven, state firemen stationed in Colton this summer, and the state forestry truck were called out yesterday to extinguish a blaze at a hog farm near Mira Loma.
The fire was centered on a collection of rubbish and did no damage to property. Don Wadel, third member of the state crew in Colton, was transferred recently to the lookout station at Cajon pass summit." (The San Bernardino County Sun)
