October 23, 1936: "During the lightning storm Patrolman Robert Smith was dispatched at night by car to Little Pine Mountain to spot a possible fire. After parking his car along Buckhorn Road, three lookouts, La Cumbre, Big Pine and Camuesa, immediately reported a fire in his vicinity. Investigation revealed that this "fire" was the tail light of Patrolman Smith's car which showed a deep red when the emergency brake had been set. The airline distance from these three lookouts to the car was estimated at eleven miles, seven miles and three miles, respectively. - Santa Barbara - (California Ranger)
