June 14, 1935: "Two CCC men have been appointed to fire lookouts by District Ranger E. M. Lyda, he announced this morning.

August 6, 1936: "Conrad Munson, lookout on Manzanita peak in Santa Barbara National forest, sent the following 'daily report' to District Ranger E. M. Lyda today: 'This morning I noticed a humming bird, darting about a flag in front of the station. The bird waited until the wind has extended the flag, then timing her flight to perfection, the bird extracted a red thread, which she evidently intended to use in an artistic weave in her nest. I hope her choice of such a warm color won;t startle the babies when they break through their shells." (Santa Maria Daily Times)

October 13, 1937: "Forest officials feared fires last night, because of lightning. The local district forest ranger's office said that lightning struck at the Manzanita lookout station, between the station and a flagpole nearby. Warren Rice is the lookout at the post." (Santa Maria Daily Times)

June 16, 1938: "Bert Feehan, who has been employed as clerk in the U.S. Forest Service office in Santa Maria for the past two years, today commenced his new duties as lookout on Mt. Manzanita. Protective Assistant Art Miles accompanied him to his station.
The new radio and telephone connections, which are being installed throughout the district to provide better communication with headquarters and between lookout and guard stations, were set up at the Manzanita lookout upon its opening today. The lookout is the last in the district to open for the fire season and completes the chain of quick-communication in case of fire." (Santa Maria Daily Times)

November 15, 1939: "Although the fire season will not end until the advent of rains alleviates hazardous conditions, the Forest Service protection staff will be trimmed gradually this month.
