MISC. NOTES - CALIFORNIA
July 10, 1912: "Reports coming from various lookout stations indicate that the forest fire season is on. Yesterday a fire was reported from Mount Fillmore in the Plumas forest, which is about eighteen miles south of Downieville, and is thought to be near the Deadwood mine. This is the first time a fire from the Mount Fillmore lookout has been reported to local headquarters." (Sacramento Union)
October 20, 1921: "Dinuba, Cal. -- The flag pole at the Peak Lookout station near here is no more. Lightning struck the pole and completely demolished it, according to reports from the station. The lookout cabin, protected by lightning rods, was undamaged by the storm." (Los Angeles Herald)
May 1931: "Four lookout towers are being constructed on the Sacramento Canton district of the Shasta National Forest, Calif. With these towers added to the four already in use, 84 per cent of this 400,000-acre unit will be directly visible from one or more towers. Areas that will be directly visible to lookouts when the towers now under construction are completed include 90 per cent of those fires have occurred in the district since intensive protection was instituted."
