OWENS MOUNTAIN (copper peak)
Fresno County - California Department of Forestry
July 22, 1944: "State division of forestry fire suppression crews fought for nearly five hours yesterday afternoon before bringing under control a grass fire which started on the army rifle range near Owens Mountain, northeast of Clovis.
The blaze fanned by a wind, swept east over Owens Mountain and burned a strip approximately a quarter of a mile wide and four miles long. By the time it was extinguished it reached the vicinity of the Copper Peak Lookout Station, which first reported the fire shortly before 3 P.M.
The cause of the blaze still is under investigation." (The Fresno Bee The Republican)
