ALLEN PEAK
San Mateo County - California Department of Forestry
August 15, 1941: "Men and youths from the Gilroy (CCC) camp have constructed more than 200 miles of roads and telephone lines and have aided in combating numerous fires in forest areas of San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties since its opening in 1933. In addition, the camp has furnished labor for construction of 20 buildings in the three counties, three of which are located in San Mateo county. Men and youths from the camp are now building a lookout tower on Allen peak, a mile north of the Skyline boulevard-La Honda road intersection." (The Times - San Mateo)
November 29, 1956: "The unseasonably dry weather has also caused concern among the county's fire departments. County Fire Warden Ernest Werder said the danger of fire in the county's open lands is nearly as bad now as during the summer months.
Because of the lack of rainfall the county's Allen lookout tower has been reactivated to keep a watch over the forest areas in the south county." (The Times - San Mateo)

Assistant Ranger John Lake of the Forestry Division and his radio-equipped pickup, stand at the base of the new steel tower which will soon replace the old wooden structure whose timbers have been fractured by 80 mile gales atop this knoll in the western section of San Mateo County."
