August 20, 1937: "Work was discontinued on the upper Bichota truck trails because of the shortage of equipment and importance of resuming work on the Crystal lake truck trail with the hopes of reaching the site of the new Mt. Hawkins lookout tower before work must be halted for the winter months." (Covina Argus)
July 19, 1960: "Sandy DeLapp, a lookout stationed northeast of the Coldbrook Ranger Station, was evacuated Monday night when the fire swept to within a mile and one half of her lookout. There are 900 firefighters on the lines and 600 more are being rushed to the area. 300 of them Indians from Arizona and New Mexico.
The fire started two days ago at San Gabriel Dam No. 1, six miles north of Azusa. Turbulent winds whipped the flames from two intersecting canyons into an inferno that belched fire 2,000 feet high, jumped the San Gabriel River fork and periled 400 firefighters in the Rincon Ranger Station area." November 8, 1966: "At one point forest rangers were almost unsuccessful in removing a seasonal lookout, Sandy DeLappe, from her tower on Mt. South Hawkins above Crystal Lake. The evacuation truck became stuck in the fresh snow and the lookout had to hike to safety." (Pasadena Independent)
August 18, 1967: "Thundershowers continued to play havoc in the Angeles National Forest region of Southern California Thursday night as lightning touched off several small fires.
The largest of the blazes was reported burning near Mt. Hawkins lookout tower, about 30 miles north of Azusa." (The Modesto Bee)
September 2002: The lookout was burned when a forest fire known as the Leona Fire charred a large area and destroyed numerous buildings, including the old Ranger Station at Coldbrook
