August 18, 1939: "The Santa Margarita fire late today had burned more than 2,000 acres, had reached the national guard camp five miles from San Luis Obispo and was racing toward the Cerro Alto lookout station and the Hale ranch." (The San Bernardino County Sun)
November 13, 1953: "Mrs. C.C. Yates of Grover City returned recently from duty in the Forest Service, where she operated a forest fire lookout station for over four months, from July 1 to November 8. Mrs. Yates, working by herself on Cerro Alto peak, a lookout about nine miles from Morro Bay, could spot fires as far south as below Grover City.
She and her husband formerly worked together, but because of a heart ailment, Yates now stays in Grover City in the summer." (The Arroyo Grande Valley Herald Recorder)
