May 13, 1931: "Ranger Frost of the state forest rangers office at Sacramento has been here looking over the site for the construction of a lookout station on Schaffer mountain in the eastern section of Honey Lake valley. Six miles of telephone line will be built, connecting with the Mapes ranch in the Tules district." (Reno Evening Gazette)
June 26, 1931: "Emmet Brockman is working on the road to the Shaffer Mountain lookout station." (Lassen Advocate - Susanville)
September 18, 1940: "Several acres of brush and grass grazing land was burned over several days ago on George Giraldo and Claude Noble ranches and just above the James Mapes property, it was reported by the United States forest service.
The blaze was soon under control when a truck load of forest service men arrived on the scene. The fire was located by the attendant at the Schaffer Peak lookout above here." (Nevada State Journal)
