November 3, 1936: "The program for Murphy CCC camp includes construction of a lookout tower on Fowler peak in Calaveras county; building of 11 miles of telephone line from Fowler peak to Carley and the reconstruction of six miles of line from Murphy to the Calaveras ranger station." November 19, 1986: "Another CCC project was the construction of the Fowler Lookout Tower on Bear Mountain in Calaveras County, CCC alumni are in the process of re-erecting the tower on the Calaveras County Fairgrounds near Angels Camp." (The Union Democrat)
1987-8: A 41-foot steel tower with a 14 foot square, two level lookout house erected at a cost of approximately $70,000.
October 28, 2008: "Fred Ray Hooker, Obituary" "In 1938, as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, living at Pinegrove Camp, he helped build the fire lookout tower at Bear Mountain. In recent years many of the original builders, including Mr. Hooker, were recruited by the California forestry department to dismantle, move and re-assemble the tower to the Angels Camp fairgrounds, where it stands today."
