September 26, 1935: "Raymond Johnson, 21-year-old forest ranger, was killed and his companion, Mrs. Ruth Vasquez of Verdi, injured seriously in an automobile accident west of here early yesterday.
The mishap occurred on the Verdi highway when the automobile in which the couple was riding struck a rock bank and overturned. Young Johnson died instantly and Mrs. Vasquez was so seriously injured little hope is held for her recovery.
Johnson and Mrs. Vasquez were enroute to Reno and as they neared the Durham ranch east of Verdi the car struck the embankment and rolled over for 100 yards. The car was completely demolished.
Johnson had been in the U.S. forest service for a short time and had been stationed at the Dog Valley lookout." (Nevada State Journal)

September 25, 1938: "Forest fire suppression crews in the Tahoe National Forest have a mystery on their hands. They can't find a fire sighted by lookouts at Crystal Peak and Martis Peak in Bear Valley.
The fire was reported in a comparatively inaccessible part of the forest, and rangers have been searching for it for several days. As yet, source of the smoke is still a mystery.
Forest Supervisor DeWitt Nelson said that a tree might have been struck by lightning and be giving off a puff of smoke now and then. It not found and extinguished, the blaze might break out and spread rapidly during a period of high temperature, low humidity and windy conditions." (Nevada State Journal)
