HUMBOLDT COUNTY
GRASSHOPPER MOUNTAIN
California Department of Forestry
May 25, 1957: "Lee Ball of Greenwood Heights has been assigned to the lookout station atop Grasshopper Mountain, near Dyerville in southern Humboldt county. He will be occupying temporary trailer quarters, starting June 3. A new tower, in process of construction, is being erected at the site of the old one which was declared unsafe.
The Grasshopper station overlooks the Mattole and Honeydew areas to the west and to Garberville on the south. Ball is a veteran lookout attendant, having served in that capacity at various posts in the county. It will be his third season at Grasshopper Mountain.
Two years, before the last assignment, were spent at the Mount Pierce Lookout in southern Humboldt and then there were three seasons of service at Schoolhouse Peak in northern Humboldt which overlooks the Weitchpec area and Orick." (Eureka Humboldt Times)

October 17, 1957: "Lee Ball of Greenwood Heights, a lookout attendant atop Grasshopper Mountain during the past summer, has been relieved of his duties a month earlier than usual due the early heavy rainfall which has eliminated the fire danger." (Eureka Humboldt Times)
August 14, 1967: "Grasshopper Lookout is one of the newer lookouts in the state having been built 10 years ago. The tower is enclosed with lightly tinted picture window glass which is tilted outward from the ceiling. The tower is equipped with a gas stove, sink with faucet, kitchen facilities and regulation lookout equipment. Bedroom facilities are on the second level of the building." (The Times Standard)
