DYER MOUNTAIN
Lassen County - California Department of Forestry
1934: With lumber supplied by the Red River Lumber Company, a Conservation Corps crew erected the lookout. Building materials and supplies were delivered to the lookout site by pack horse.
June 21, 1937: "High winds have caused considerable damage to lookout stations the past week. The lookout building at Dyer Mountain had the shutters on the west side completely torn off. They were scattered about for almost a quarter of a mile down the mountain side. (Lassen Advocate - Susanville)
July 3, 1937: "Air mail service was recently inaugurated from Westwood to Dyer Mountain lookout through the courtesy of Geo. Shaw, Westwood pilot, who has been dropping the daily newspaper on top of Dyer Mountain for Mr. Paul, Lookout." (Lassen Advocate - Susanville)
September 15, 1937: "Fire started from a spark from a brake shoe on a flatcar, destroyed a trestle supporting The Red River Lumber company's logging road across Dry Creek, 10 miles west of Westwood Monday evening.
The fire was first reported by the forest lookout on Dyer Mountain, and a fire train from Westwood with 20,000 gallons of water was soon at the scene.
Destruction of the trestle will hold up delivery of about half a million feet of logs to the Red River plant until it is replaced." (Lassen Advocate - Susanville)
June 24, 1955: "Dyer Mountain and Mount Harkness lookouts are now in operation for the summer.
John and Lillian Dulvick are starting their tenth summer season at Dyer Mountain lookout which covers a large portion of the Chester-Lake Almanor area." (Chester Progressive)
June 22, 1956: "Lillian and John Dulvick and their daughter, Alice, of Clarksburg are now located in Dyer Mountain Lookout. They hiked up to the lookout Sunday, but the road should be open all the way to the top soon.
This is the eleventh year with the Forest Service for the Dulvicks." (Chester Progressive)
May 26, 1992: "There is a distinct possibility the Dyer Lookout will not be manned during the fire season and officials are concerned.
Since state financing of the tower's operation was cut from the budget in the 1991-92 fiscal year, the lookout has come close to extinction, saved only by 'severity' funds provided last year from the state Department of Finance, which enabled staffing of the lookout for the 1991 fire season.
This year, the lookout faces a worse dilemma as no severity funds are forthcoming. The only hope is possible funding from private industries or Forest Service assistance." (Lassen County Times)
June 23, 1992: "The fate of Dyer Lookout has been again causing some stir. Things are temporarily lookoind up, however, as the lookout opened Monday, June 15.
According to CDF Lassen-Modoc Unit Ranger Chief Bob Taylor, based in Susanville, thanks to a redirection of funds within his own unit, the lookout is currently funded for two months, until mid-August.
Local CDF Ranger Tom Rees, while admitting to being 'extremely happy' about the June 15 opening of Dyer, nonetheless termed it a 'stop-gap measure', adding that it is 'very temporary'." (Lassen County Times)
October 29, 1996: "Dyer faced dire straits before both the 1991 and 1992 fire season, when its financing was cut. Funds came through in the nick of time for both seasons. Today, it remains funded by the state." (Lassen County Times)
