BOARD CAMP
Humboldt County - Six Rivers National Forest
September 22, 1934: "Work has begun on the Board camp telephone line. Mr. Benson has a small crew of men camped there. It is hoped that the line will be complete and the lookout ready for occupancy within the next two weeks." (Blue Lake Advocate)
March 3, 1953: "Braving snowdrifts fifteen to twenty feet deep to spend a wintry holiday early last week at Board Camp Lookout Tower, John S. Williamson of Bayside reported by radio, 'All's well up here.' Williamson, also known as 'Board Camp Johnny,' usually spends a good part of each summer at the lookout station as a lookout man.
This is voluntary work for Johnny, who has spent the past ten seasons at this lonely post 5200 feet above sea level and now five miles from the end of the road.
Board Camp Mountain is no longer considered a key lookout point by the Six Rivers National Forest, but Johnny's observations are essential during periods of critical fire weather. He has also made many improvements to the station such as running hot and cold water, gas stove, refrigerator and lights. Next thing is a swimming pool says Williamson.
Incidentally, he's a whiz at sourdough hotcakes, but you've got to be there early in the morning." (Eureka Humboldt Times)
