May 16, 1936: "Simultaneous with the announcement Friday by Regional Forester S. B. Show of the official opening of the 1936 forest fire season, came word of progress toward construction of a fire lookout station on the Ventana double cone, behind the Big Sur region.
In the heart of the Santa Lucia range, the station will be the fifth in the chain of radio or telephone equipped lookouts for the protection of the Monterey division of the Santa Barbara national forest.
Materials for the new Ventana lookout are now being packed in by forestry service employes from the Cachagus district to Big Pines, where they will be stored for later transportation to the rugged summit.\
Short wave radio communication will be established between the new station when it is completed and the other fire stations as a part of the new and efficient mode of fire suppression service instituted by the department." (The Californian)
