LAKE COUNTY
GARRETT MOUNTAIN
.
June 21, 1944: "An unusual sight met the gaze of Mr. and Mrs. B.M. Bucknell at Garrett Mt. Lookout Station Saturday afternoon, following the heavy downpour this end of the county received that afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Bucknell were looking over the landscape around the station when their attention was attracted by two large deer that were feeding nearby. Shortly they noticed the deer acting in a strange manner and in a few moments leaped away into the timber. Following closely on the disappearance of the deer a huge panther came into the opening. A telephone call to Harry Vann ranch, only a few miles distant, brought Harry, with his son, Merrill, and Dick Hall up with their varmint dogs. For some unknown reason the dogs failed to pick up the scent of the marauder. Mr. Bucknell regrets he did not have his gun at the lookout as he feels he could have killed the panther, and Mrs. Bucknell regrets she did not have her camera loaded as she could have had a good picture of both deer and cat."
