August 17, 1939: "Joe Calandra, Carmel Hill, an assistant state forest ranger, was reported missing today in the Big Sur forest area." (The Times)
August 18, 1939: "State Fire Dispatcher S.L. Lamerton announced today the body of Joe Calandra, forest ranger burned to death battling a fire in the redwood district of Little Sur, near Carmel, was found by a searching party." (Santa Cruz Sentinel)
August 19, 1939: "The victim was Joseph Calandra, 25, assistant fire ranger, killed while fighting a blaze on the Little Sur river in Monterey county. He had escaped the flames, his clothing burned off, but fell among the rocks and died. Calandra's clothes were afire when John F. Murray, 18, of Oakland, and Ray Brown, 18, last saw him. Both Murray and Brown are in the Peninsula Hospital at Carmel, unable to give a coherent account of what happened but both insisted Calandra died in the line of duty." (The Bakersfield Californian)
August 20, 1939: "The body of State Ranger Joe Calandra, victim of the Bixby Mountain fire, will be taken to St. Helena, his native town, for burial. He had been stationed at Carmel and was caught in the flames when he attempted to scout the fire Wednesday." (Santa Cruz Sentinel)
