LOS ANGELES COUNTY
WHITTAKER PEAK
Angeles National Forest
October 19, 1959: "One fire, a 200-acre blaze in Halley Canyon, definitely was set, the U.S. Forest Service said. Officials said a lookout in the Whitaker Peak station saw a man drive up, set the fire, and drive away.
About an hour later, 10 miles from Halley Canyon blaze, another small fire began, and officials said it looked like arson. It had burned about 200 acres.
The third blaze, on Whitaker Peak, finally forced the evacuation of the lookout tower. That blaze charred 100 acres." (The Arizona Republic)
