November 19, 1956: "The U.S. Forest Service dispatcher's office in Arcadia reported at noon that their lookout on Sierra Pelona Ridge, 15 miles west of Palmdale, had recorded gusts of wind up to 100 mph. The lookout tower was reportedly disintegrating in the gale and the lookout was ordered to evacuate the structure." (Star-News)
February 21, 1964: "High winds in the Angeles National Forest were reported by U.S. Forest Service Ranger "Cas" Casparis, who is stationed in a 40-foot tower on Sierra Pelona Lookout at the 4000-foot level, 15 miles northeast of Newhall. He reported winds of 85 mph coming from the northeast." (The Valley News - Van Nuys)
August 11, 1964: "A fire burned over 10 acres of brushland in Bee Canyon, 10 miles northeast of Newhall before firemen could bring the blaze under control.
Some 175 firemen battled the blaze in 100 degree temperatures for nearly two hours before it was brought under control on Sunday.
There were no injuries in the blaze and no homes consumed.
The fire was spotted at 12:30 p.m. by a lookout in the Sierra Polona station and burned until about 2:30. Several units of equipment remained on the scene as firemen continued mop up operations." (The Valley News - Van Nuys)
