November 8, 1923: "State Forester M.B. Pratt announced today that the state, in conjunction with the West Side Fire Protective Association, will erect a lookout station on Mt. Orestimba, fifteen miles west of Newman, Stanislaus County, to insure better fire protection service for Stanislaus and Merced Counties.
The lookout station will be built under state supervision by the fire protective association, which is composed of farmers and stockmen of Stanislaus and Merced Counties. It will be completed early next year and will be manned by a lookout to be chosen from the state fire patrol.
A special telephone line will be strung between the station and Newman to permit the lookout to report fires as soon as they are discovered." (Fresno Bee)
