September 8, 1987: "The Forest Service lit fires around the perimeter of what was Wednesday a 3,000-acre blaze on Hat Creek in a gamble they hoped would burn fire lines and protect structures. Due to high winds, the backfires escaped and a conflagration had developed in the dry forest by Thursday.
The backfires did save threatened structures, however.
Two structures, the Hat Creek Lookout Station and a barn on the Wilcox ranch had been lost in the blaze by Thursday." (Lassen County Times)
