SANTA PAULA PEAK
Ventura County - Santa Barbara National Forest
September 17, 1929: "Foresters are pushing the work on the new lookout station on Santa Paula creek. The trail and telephone line have already been completed. This station will enable the foresters to observe the southern part of the national forest. The project will require the expenditure of $6000, it is figured." (Lompoc Review)
September 18, 1932: "C.A. Kennison, fire lookout at Santa Paula peak, reported the flames drove him from his post. He said 20 other men sent to fight the blaze, were trapped temporarily.
'Their radio was burned and they could not communicate with me', Kennison said. 'They managed to fight through at 5 a.m.'
Norman Keene, one of the fire fighters, with three other men, managed to contact another crew of men and warned them of the approaching holocaust, Kennison said.
The fire originally broke out in Santa Barbara national forest. It spread to several fronts despite desperate efforts to curb it. It has been burning for almost two weeks." (Wisconsin State Journal)
